The $150 setup that actually works

Rod — 7' medium, fast action, spinning (~$35)
Reel — 2500 or 3000 size spinning reel (~$35)
Line — 20lb braid plus a 12lb fluorocarbon leader (~$25 for both)
Terminal tackle — hooks in two sizes, split shot, swivels, a few jigheads (~$20)
Lures — six, not sixty: a soft plastic worm, a jig, a spinnerbait, a crankbait, a topwater, a swimbait (~$30)
Tools — pliers with a line cutter, and nail clippers for knots (~$15)

Add a state fishing license, and that is a complete setup. Six lures that you learn properly will catch more fish than sixty you rotate through at random.

Add these in year two

A tackle bag with 3600 trays — the standard size, so everything fits everything
A second rod rigged differently, so you can change technique without retying
Polarized sunglasses — the highest-value $40 in fishing, because you suddenly see structure and fish
A landing net with rubber mesh, which is far gentler on fish you release
A fillet knife and a cutting board if you keep fish

The five things beginners buy too early

A baitcaster. Learn to fish on spinning gear first. The baitcaster solves a problem you do not have yet.
Sixty lures. Six lures fished well beat sixty fished randomly. Most tackle boxes are 80 percent lures that have never been wet.
An expensive rod. Get the power and action right at $35 first; upgrade when you know what you want.
A fish finder. Learn to read water and structure with your eyes first — that skill transfers and outlasts any electronics.
A boat. Bank and kayak fishing will teach you more per dollar than a boat will, and far faster.

The things nobody mentions and everybody needs

Nail clippers. Best line cutter available, costs a dollar, fits in a pocket.
Polarized sunglasses. Both an eye-safety item — hooks come back at you — and the single biggest improvement to what you can see in the water.
A towel. Fish are slippery and slime gets on everything.
A first aid kit with a hook-removal plan. Barbed hooks in fingers are the most common fishing injury by a wide margin.
Your license, on you. Digital is fine in most states; check yours.

Before you go

Check your state's regulations for the water you are fishing — seasons, size limits, bag limits and bait restrictions vary by waterbody, not just by state, and they change annually. Every state publishes them free.

Do I need polarized sunglasses for fishing?
