Best Camp Chairs

The specification nobody lists is seat height, and it is the one that decides whether you enjoy the chair after fifty.

Camp chairs split cleanly by how far they have to travel. Quad chairs — the folding kind with arms and a cup holder — are comfortable, cheap and completely impractical to carry. Ultralight chairs pack to the size of a water bottle and are noticeably less comfortable over a long evening.

The specification that decides satisfaction and never appears in a listing is seat height. Ultralight chairs sit low — often eight to twelve inches off the ground — and getting out of one repeatedly is genuinely hard on knees and hips. If that matters to you, it matters more than any other feature here.

The second unlisted problem is leg sink. Thin tube legs on an ultralight chair sink into soft ground and grass. Ground discs cost a few dollars and fix it entirely.

Picking a chair

Match it to the distance

If the chair only ever travels between the truck and the fire, buy a quad chair and enjoy the comfort. If it goes in a pack at all, buy ultralight and accept that it is a seat rather than an armchair. Buying an ultralight chair for car camping is paying a comfort penalty for nothing.

Check the weight capacity honestly

Ratings between 225 and 350 pounds are typical. Buy comfortably above your weight — a chair at its rated limit flexes, wears faster and fails suddenly.

Mesh versus solid fabric

Mesh backs are considerably cooler in summer heat and offer no wind protection. Solid polyester is warmer in shoulder seasons and holds moisture longer after rain.

Cup holders and side tables are not gimmicks

They are the difference between a drink in your hand and a drink in the dirt. This is a small point that turns out to matter every single evening.

Buy for the ground you sit on

Thin legs on grass, sand or soft soil sink. Ground discs or wider feet solve it for a few dollars, and it is worth solving before the first trip rather than after.

If you carry them, absolutely — sitting on something other than the ground after a long day is worth a pound. If the chair never leaves the campsite, a quad chair is more comfortable and cheaper.
How much weight can a camp chair hold?
