There are two roof load ratings and confusing them is the most consequential mistake in rooftop tents.
Dynamic roof load is the maximum weight the roof may carry while the vehicle is moving. It accounts for suspension movement, cornering forces, braking and the loads a bump puts through the mounting points. On most crossovers and unibody SUVs it sits between 100 and 165 pounds. It includes the rack and crossbars.
Static roof load is what the roof holds while parked — no suspension movement, no lateral forces. It is far higher, often three times the dynamic figure or more, because the structure is simply supporting weight. This is why two adults can sleep in a rooftop tent on a roof rated at 165 pounds dynamic without anything failing.
Both are real. Only one governs the drive to the campsite, and it is the smaller one.
The arithmetic, worked
Step 1 — Find your dynamic rating
Owner's manual, usually in the section on roof racks or vehicle loading. Not a forum, not a parts-store lookup, not the rack manufacturer's fitment guide — those tell you whether a rack physically fits, which is a different question. Typical figures:

These are ranges to orient you, not a substitute for your own manual. Manufacturers vary substantially even within a class.
Step 2 — Subtract the rack
The dynamic rating includes everything mounted up there. An aftermarket rack with crossbars is typically 40 to 60 pounds; a full platform rack can be 70 to 100.
Example. A mid-size SUV rated 165 lb dynamic, with a 50 lb platform rack, leaves 115 lb for the tent. A typical aluminum hardshell weighs 130 to 160 lb. That does not fit, and no amount of enthusiasm changes it.
Step 3 — Check the rack's own rating
Crossbars and rails have their own load ratings, and factory rails are frequently rated well below an aftermarket crossbar. The lowest rating in the chain — roof, rails, crossbars, tent mounting hardware — is the one that governs. People routinely check the roof and forget the rails.
What the options are when the numbers do not work
- An inflatable or lightweight tent. These weigh a fraction of a hardshell and change the arithmetic entirely.
- A truck bed rack. Bed racks bolt to the bed, not the roof, and are often rated for hundreds of pounds. On a pickup this is usually the right answer.
- A trailer. A small off-road trailer takes the weight off the vehicle entirely and adds storage.
- A ground tent. Cheaper, lighter, and better in most respects that are not setup speed.
What exceeding the rating actually does
It is not usually a dramatic failure. It raises the vehicle's center of gravity, which degrades handling and increases rollover risk; it stresses roof mounting points over time on unibody vehicles; and it may affect your insurance position after an incident. None of those announce themselves, which is precisely why the number gets ignored.
How these were picked
I haven't handled these. Here's what I did instead.
Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. I haven't tested any, and I say so. What I do instead: read the manufacturer's manual and published specification, compile the numbers that decide the purchase, do the arithmetic in the open, check the live price, and name one product to skip. The scores above are judgments from that research against a published rubric — they are not measurements I took, because I do not have a lab and I am not going to pretend otherwise.
