Best Vehicle Awnings

The specification that matters is hydrostatic head, and most awnings do not publish one. The specification that hurts you is wind loading.

An awning is the highest-value comfort item on a vehicle build. It turns the side of your truck into a shaded kitchen in twenty seconds, it keeps rain off the cooking area, and it costs a fraction of a rooftop tent.

Two specifications decide one. Hydrostatic head, quoted in millimeters, is the waterproof rating: 3,000mm handles light rain, 10,000mm handles a downpour. Most awning listings do not quote it at all, and those that do are worth paying attention to.

The specification that decides the other is wind. An awning is a sail bolted to your roof rack, and the force it puts through the mounting points scales with its area. This is why bigger is emphatically not better, and why every awning should be guyed and pegged rather than left cantilevered off the vehicle.

What's good

  • Mounting hardware included rather than a separate purchase
  • Large enough to cover a cooking area and a door
  • Genuinely weatherproof rather than just a sunshade

What's not

  • Adds permanent weight and wind noise to the rack
  • Two-person setup for the first installation

What's good

  • Enormous shaded area
  • Blackout coating genuinely blocks sun

What's not

  • A 19-foot span attached to a vehicle roof rack is a sail — the force a gust puts through the mounting points scales with area, and this has roughly three times the area of a normal awning
  • No stated wind rating, and no described guying system adequate to that span
  • The load path runs into your roof rack, which has its own rating you are now stressing sideways
  • The 8-foot awnings above cover a cooking area and a door, which is what an awning is for

Choosing and living with an awning

Size to your vehicle, not to your ambition

A 6.5 by 8-foot awning covers a cooking area and a door, which is what an awning is for. Larger awnings add wind loading faster than they add usefulness, and the load runs through your rack's mounting points into your roof.

Guy it out, every time

An awning left unguyed is held up by its arms and by the rack. A gust then applies a long lever to your roof rack mounting points. Guy lines and pegs take ninety seconds and are the difference between an awning and an expensive lesson.

Take it down before you leave camp

The most common way awnings are destroyed is being driven with. Ten seconds of checking before you move the vehicle prevents almost every awning failure that is not wind.

Mounting brackets and rack ratings

Awnings bolt to crossbars, and the crossbars have their own rating, often lower than the roof's. Check both, and factor the awning's weight into your dynamic roof load budget alongside a tent if you have one.

Dry it before packing

A rolled wet awning grows mildew inside its cover, which destroys the fabric coating and the smell never leaves. If you pack wet, unroll it at home within a day.

How these were picked

I haven't handled these. Here's what I did instead.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. I haven't tested any, and I say so. What I do instead: read the manufacturer's manual and published specification, compile the numbers that decide the purchase, do the arithmetic in the open, check the live price, and name one product to skip. The scores above are judgments from that research against a published rubric — they are not measurements I took, because I do not have a lab and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Questions

Frequently asked

What size vehicle awning do I need?
Around 6.5 by 8 feet covers a cooking area and a door for most vehicles, which is what an awning is actually for. Larger awnings add wind loading through your rack mounting points faster than they add useful shade.
What waterproof rating should an awning have?
3,000mm hydrostatic head handles light rain, 10,000mm handles sustained heavy rain. Most awnings do not publish a figure at all — where one does, that is worth something in a category where nobody else states anything.
Can you leave an awning up in wind?
Not safely unguyed. An awning is a sail attached to your roof rack, and an unguyed one puts a long lever through the mounting points. Guy lines and pegs take ninety seconds and prevent most awning failures.
Can I drive with an awning mounted?
Yes when it is rolled and latched — that is the point of a vehicle awning. What you cannot do is drive with it deployed, which is how most awnings are destroyed.

We do not run a testing lab and we do not pretend to. Where a measured number came from a manufacturer's published specification or someone else's lab, we name them and link them. Where we could not verify something, we say so on the page rather than quietly leaving it out. Read the full method.
