Best Shooting Rests

A rest removes you from the accuracy equation, which is the only way to find out whether the rifle or the load is the problem.

The point of a shooting rest is to remove the shooter as a variable. When a rifle will not group, there are three possible causes — the rifle, the ammunition, or you — and until you eliminate the third one you cannot diagnose the other two.

The two approaches: a one-piece rest that you set the rifle into and shoot from, which is fast and stable and offers no fine adjustment, or a front and rear bag setup where you squeeze the rear bag to change elevation, which is what benchrest shooters use and requires technique.

For sighting in and general bench work, a one-piece rest is simpler and better. For load development where you are chasing quarter-inch differences, the bag setup or a mechanically adjustable rest gives you the control you need.

What's good

  • One-piece design cannot shift between front and rear like a two-bag setup
  • Non-marring surface will not scuff a stock
  • Genuinely stable for sighting in and load development
  • No assembly, no filling, no adjustment

What's not

  • No height adjustment, so bench height dictates your position
  • Bulky to carry

Skip it if…

you need to adjust elevation precisely for load development. A proper adjustable rest does that and this does not.

What's good

  • Two-bag setup lets you adjust elevation by squeezing the rear bag, which is the technique benchrest shooters use
  • Adapts to rifles of different stock shapes
  • Arrives filled, so no sourcing sand

What's not

  • Two bags can shift relative to each other
  • Less stable than a one-piece rest for a beginner

Skip it if…

you want to set it down and shoot. Two bags require technique that a one-piece rest does not.

What's good

  • Squeezing a rear bag is how you make fine elevation adjustments without touching the scope
  • Pairs with any front rest, including a pack or a bipod
  • Cheapest useful improvement to bench accuracy

What's not

  • Rear bag alone does nothing without a front support

What's good

  • Very cheap
  • Light to ship and to carry empty

What's not

  • Unfilled bags exist because filled bags are heavy to ship, and the cost is transferred to you in effort rather than removed
  • Sand is the obvious filler and the wrong one — it works through seams over time and gets into actions and optics
  • Better fillers (plastic media, crushed walnut) cost enough that the total exceeds a pre-filled Caldwell
  • A pre-filled Caldwell rear bag costs about $20 and works out of the box

Getting real information from a bench session

Support the forend, never the barrel

The barrel vibrates in a repeatable pattern with each shot, and that pattern determines where the bullet leaves. Resting the barrel on anything changes the pattern and changes your point of impact. Support the forend, ahead of the magazine well and behind the sling stud.

Load the bipod or the bag consistently

If you push forward into a bipod or a front bag, do it the same amount every shot. Inconsistent forward pressure is one of the most common causes of vertical stringing, and it looks exactly like an ammunition problem.

Let the rifle recoil

Gripping hard to control recoil introduces a different input every shot. Consistent light contact produces smaller groups than a firm hold, which is counterintuitive and is why benchrest technique looks so relaxed.

Let the barrel cool

A hot barrel walks. Three-shot groups with a few minutes between them tell you far more about a rifle than a ten-shot string fired as fast as you can work the bolt.

What a rest cannot fix

Loose scope rings, a loose action screw, an inconsistent hold or bad ammunition. Check the torque on your rings and action screws before you conclude the rifle does not shoot — the number of "inaccurate" rifles that were a loose ring screw is very high.

How these were picked

I haven't handled these. Here's what I did instead.

Everyone in this category says they tested twenty of these. I haven't tested any, and I say so. What I do instead: read the manufacturer's manual and published specification, compile the numbers that decide the purchase, do the arithmetic in the open, check the live price, and name one product to skip. The scores above are judgments from that research against a published rubric — they are not measurements I took, because I do not have a lab and I am not going to pretend otherwise.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do I need a shooting rest to sight in a rifle?
You need something stable. A proper rest is easiest, but a pack, a rolled jacket or sandbags on a bench will do the job. What matters is that the support is consistent shot to shot and that it holds the forend rather than the barrel.
Should the barrel rest on the bag?
No. The barrel vibrates in a repeatable pattern that determines where the bullet leaves, and resting it on anything changes that pattern. Support the forend, ahead of the magazine and behind the sling stud.
What do you fill shooting bags with?
Purpose-made bags are filled with sand, crushed walnut or plastic media. Sand is heaviest and most stable and it works through seams over time, getting into actions and optics. Buying pre-filled from a maker who chose the right media avoids the problem.
Why do my groups string vertically?
Usually inconsistent forward pressure into the rest or bipod, or a hot barrel. Both look exactly like an ammunition problem. Let the barrel cool between three-shot groups and load the rest the same amount every shot.
