The verdict first: buy a matched tripod-and-head kit rated for optics, add a twenty-eight-dollar binocular adapter, and you will see more animals than a several-hundred dollar jump in glass would have shown you. Hand shake, not resolution, is what limits most people.
The reason is simple and slightly deflating: at 10x, the tremor in your hands is magnified ten times too. Put the same binoculars on a tripod and detail appears that was physically present the whole time and simply moving too fast to resolve.
